Hello! My name is Mia Lynn King. I am a game designer and a recent graduate who recieved my M.S in Serious Games at The University of California Santa Cruz this past spring.
I believe that games can make the world a better place by creating empathy through stories, teaching problem solving through engaging gameplay and sparking passion through the wonder and imagination games can provide.
In my last project, I worked on the systems and sound design for our capstone project; A game created with the purpose to train newcomers to the tech industry to identify and combat toxic behavior in the work place. Together my peers and I developed our capstone game Zoopany and proformed user studies to determine if games can be a more engaging alternative to learning about these topics than traditional sensitivity training.
When I am not designing or playing games, I enjoy learning foreign languages, learning to play instruments, experimenting with food and spoiling my cats!
Iteration is crucial to design. My primary skill set lies in designing game systems for both tabletop and digital games. I have experience crafting and prototyping game concepts, mechanics, and systems. This includes testing my designs and utilizing spreadsheets and flow charts to work through problems that arise. Check out my portfolio below to see my previous projects!
Sometimes games require alot of serious research and analysis. Beyond creating games for entertainment, I also have experience preforming research, conducting competitive analysis, and collaborating alongside team members and subject matter experts to design games with goals on topics such as Education, Mental health, training and social awareness.
Music and sound is a vital component to bringing games to life. I have experience in composing music for group and solo projects along with designing sound effects through foley and VSTi. Although sound design is not my primary focus, I am fully capable of creating temporary sound effects and music for any game. Check out my music in my portfolio below!
